This year celebrates 11 years of delicious cooking… and eating!
In the heart of relaxed luxury of Seven Mile Beach, Cayman Cookout at The Ritz-Carlton Resort has brought some of the world’s most talented chefs and wine specialists together for intimate cooking demonstrations, exclusive tastings and dining events, and once-in-a-lifetime culinary experiences. Now in its 11th year, Cayman Cookout has become a centrepiece in making Grand Cayman the premier culinary destination in the Caribbean, and promises to take it up a notch with nearly 60 scheduled events from January 16–20.
Female Chefs Take the Stage
This year’s Cookout will feature four superstar female chefs, including French chef Dominique Crenn, whose two-star Michelin restaurant based in San Francisco is a legend. Showcasing vegetarian cuisine and author of a groundbreaking graphic novel cookbook, New York chef Amanda Cohen will be taking guests to new heights with her sophisticated and daring dishes. Chef Emma Bengtsson, another two-star Michelin winner, will be sharing a few of her grandmother’s secrets in Swedish cuisine, whilst Chef Nancy Silverton, based in San Fernando Valley, will demonstrate her speciality in baked delights and culinary flavours for an unforgettable luncheon.
Aficionados of wine, beer and spirits will have an array of events to dive into, including the Yoga and Krug event, where guests can start their day with an energising asana routine, followed by a Champagne tasting. Whilst taking a romantic sunset sail, Thomas Fogarty Jr. will be hosting a wine tasting of bottles from his family’s California vineyard. Fans of New Zealand wines can join the owner of Craggy Range vineyards for a private jet getaway and wine tasting on the Sister Islands.
The master brewer with the 19-81 Brewing Company will share some of his techniques in creating unique flavours for an irresistible craft beer. From hops to bottling, beer lovers will also have a chance to get close to the action on the Cayman Islands Brewery tour and enjoy the island’s iconic beer with an authentic German meal.
Pump Up the Volume
The fun-loving TV host for Bizarre Foods, Chef Andrew Zimmern will show how he incorporates unusual ingredients from near and far into amazing dishes. And legendary Chef Emeril Lagasse, known for his punchy catchphrase “Bam,” will share some of the magic for his signature “New Orleans–style” dishes.
Returning Fan Favourites
Famous for his dramatic entrances, Chef José Andrés returns to cook his famous paella whilst regaling his audience with entertaining stories. And Cayman Cookout wouldn’t be complete without the Barefoot Barbecue under the stars, by Chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin and Blue and Chef Andrés as they grill a tantalising array of seafood and choice meats, along with handcrafted cocktails, live music and sweet creations by Chef Jean-Francois Suteau.
Homage to Anthony
One of the special events this year is an homage to Anthony Bourdain, a cooking legend and CNN host of Parts Unknown, who passed away last year. Chef Bourdain had participated in the Cayman Cookout since its inception and was a close friend of Chef Eric Ripert.
Presented in the vibe of the late-night TV show with a band and desk, Chef Andrew Zimmern as the host asks Chefs Ripert and José Andrés to share lighthearted stories and memories of Bourdain and the joy he brought into their lives. Like the day Ripert, Bourdain and Andrés made a spectacular entrance as they rode into the festival on horseback wearing sombreros, reminiscent of the Three Amigos movie.
“Anthony had such a busy life, travelling all of the time, so the week he spent in Cayman was something extraordinary,” says Ripert. “It was a time to laugh, joke, relax and spend time drinking and cooking on the beach.” For more information, go to caymancookout.com.
A Festival Is Born
“The event was originally designed to bring chefs to Cayman to enjoy everything the Islands have to offer and to create an experience that would interest both the locals and attract people from around the world to enjoy gastronomy, wines and the landscape and waters in an intimate and exclusive setting,” chef and festival founder Eric Ripert explains.
