Mention the name Foster and people in the Cayman Islands immediately think of Foster’s Food Fair, but there’s more to this family than just a supermarket or two. The same is true of Tanya Foster herself.
After pursuing a degree in the culinary arts, she returned home to help with her family’s business; but it was her connection to her community and a love of local foods and recipes that led her to the kitchen and in front of a camera with her own locally made cooking show “Tanya’s Kitchen.”
A Star Is Born
“‘Tanya’s Kitchen’ started in 2002 when my dad wanted me in my chef whites sharing my passion for cooking with our community,” Foster shares. Filming began in a showroom at Pooley Cabinets, and they had to bring in everything for the shoots, as they had no refrigeration.
Foster continues, “In 2005, when I remodelled my home after Hurricane Ivan, I designed my new kitchen with filming and entertaining in mind. ‘Tanya’s Kitchen’ moved to my personal kitchen, which made it easier to share my love for simple, quality ingredients with everyone.”
When asked what she loved most about “Tanya’s Kitchen,” Foster revealed, “There’s something magical about sharing the dishes I create with the community. I love cooking with raw ingredients and showing people how to elevate flavours without having to put in too much effort.” To Foster, cooking is comfort; and having people try her recipes or cook a meal with their family makes what she does more enjoyable. She adds, “More than quality ingredients, cooking requires love; and I love sharing my passion and inspiring others.”
A New Start
After taking a year off from the show to focus on opening Foster’s newest location, Foster is excited to bring back “Tanya’s Kitchen” in 2020. “The videos, recipes and calendars are all coming back; and we have some new and exciting things we’re working on you’ll have to stay tuned for!” She enthusiastically shares, “I’ve been saying it for years, but I’m also starting to gather my favourite recipes and work on my first cookbook. It’s been a dream of mine to be able to publish my recipes, and I can’t wait for it to become a reality!”
Big ideas and events are on the horizon for Foster in 2020. She is catapulting her love of food and sharing her passion of cooking to a new level. From changes to her show and creating her first cookbook, Foster is a chef to keep your eyes on.
