Focus on mind, body and soul in quiet Little Cayman
Known for its unspoiled beauty and tranquil surroundings, Little Cayman is the ideal setting for a wellness retreat of your own making. The remote tropical island is filled with lush foliage, lagoons, mangroves and white-sand beaches. With a population teetering around 170, time slows down enough to allow you to fully relax and recharge. You can even make it a day trip, since there are several daily Cayman Airways Express flights to and from Grand Cayman.
7:30 AM: Meditation and Yoga
Start your morning on a positive note with a one-to-one Hatha yoga session led by instructor Claire McGee of Little Island Yoga. Choose a quiet spot under a shady tree on the beach or on the dock of a resort — should you decide to spend the night. Tailored to your needs, the session will help restore your inner balance through poses, breath work, mindfulness and meditation techniques. The goal is to simply let go and be present with your natural surroundings.
9:00 AM: Bike around the Island
Biking is the perfect way to tour the island, which is only 10 miles long. Most resorts lend or rent bikes. Little Cayman has very little traffic, a flat landscape and paved roads, so you can easily follow an 8-mile loop around its largely undeveloped coast. Just watch out for iguanas — or stop and take photos as they cross your path.
Rest for a snack break at Point of Sand, a shifting cape of pink sand protected by a barrier reef. Then head to the National Trust’s Booby Pond Nature Reserve, home to the largest breeding colony of red-footed boobies in the Western Hemisphere.
12:30 PM: Picnic Lunch on the Beach
It’s time for a healthy lunch. Grab a to-go container from a resort restaurant and find a shaded spot on the beach to enjoy a picnic whilst you rest your limbs and take in the island breezes. The Hungry Iguana at Paradise Villas serves la carte; if you prefer a buffet, try Birds of Paradise at Little Cayman Beach Resort. Pirates Point also has a great menu that changes daily. Just remember to reserve before noon if you are not staying at the resorts.
You can also have lunch delivered by Cook Food Little Cayman. Just call ahead and specify where you’ll be! A freshly made local dish is served daily. You can try anything from conch stew and lobster to Cayman-style beef with sides like local breadfruit, cassava and green bananas.
2:00 PM: Visit Owen Island
Off the southwestern tip of Little Cayman lies Owen Island, a deserted 11-acre islet. After a trip across the sound, you’ll find its small, sandy shore and glistening turquoise waters, and odds are you may be the only one on the island — a true castaway.
5:00 PM: Nature Spa
End your day with a luxurious spa treatment at Little Cayman Beach Resort’s Nature Spa, which is housed in a traditional Caymanian cottage. Reward yourself with a sumptuous massage, body wrap or treatment like a facial or pedicure — the perfect ending to a wellness retreat tailor-made just for you. Just make sure to book your appointment in advance.
