Kirk Freeport has been a premier retailer of duty-free jewellery, watches and more in the Cayman Islands since 1972. Here, Chris Kirkconnell, grandson of founder Captain Eldon Kirkconnell, offers a few ideas on splurging this Christmas.
Q: What do you think will be the most popular big-ticket items this season?
A: For the last couple of years customers are concentrating on established big brand names. Specifically Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier have been heavily sought after, and many of their models have a waiting list. Many brands also release limited and special edition pieces and these are always in high demand. Demand has been quite above normal, so if you see a piece that you or your special someone wants, I’d recommend not waiting.
Q: When buying for your special someone what stands out to you?
A: I tend to gravitate towards timeless elegance. I like to know that when I invest in something that it will be just as coveted years from now.
Q: What would you say are the best investment pieces for jewellery?
A: According to the auction houses, the big brands in the industry with long histories always command a premium price at auction.
Q: If you could have anything for Christmas, what would it be and why?
A: The Sky-Dweller from Rolex, the TAG Heuer Carrera 01 or the Patek Philippe 5712 in steel. They are amazing pieces when you live in and around the ocean.
