Le Soleil d’Or tempts travellers with its bucolic Mediterranean charm and cliffside organic farm.
By Jackie Gutierrez-Jones
Situated 97 miles from Grand Cayman, Le Soleil d’Or, the Cayman Islands’ singular beachside farm-to-table wellness retreat, holds court on the cosy islet of Cayman Brac. The Islands are no strangers to oceanfront escapes — largely of the pool-and-frozen-beverage ilk, with a stunning vista thrown in for good measure.
But that’s where Le Soleil d’Or breaks off from the pack. The property took seven years to develop, with almost half of that dedicated to infrastructure and, most importantly, laying the groundwork for a 20-acre organic farm. The owner, a New York businesswoman inspired by her own agrarian roots and Mediterranean heritage, managed to successfully transform the untameable terrain and rocky bluffs of Cayman Brac into a wellness-focused sanctuary with a thriving farmland that feeds the resort’s — and guests’ — souls.
Living the Suite Life
Guests have the option of hanging their hat in one of the four spacious suites of the boutique hotel. Depending on the room, one might encounter a private balcony with an unfettered view of the Caribbean Sea or a quaint garden terrace for quiet moments of solitude.
Need some extra leg room? The 1,000-square-foot beach cottage with a private pool fits the bill. As does the two-story, 4,000-square-foot beach house, boasting an outdoor deck equipped with its own barbecue grill and pool.
For those yearning for a verdant escape, the farmhouse lodge is truly a unique experience for the island. Perched atop a limestone bluff, the house sleeps six guests and marries the serene panorama of the ocean with the lush landscape of the farmland.
The home-away-from-home hospitality weaves itself throughout every aspect of one’s experience here, as evidenced by the fully stocked kitchens of the cottage, house and lodge.
Just Say Spahhh…
After a day spent working with one of the resort’s personal trainers or navigating the waters of Cayman Brac via the resort’s kayaks and snorkelling gear, Spa Soleil serves as the perfect antidote to sun-zapped skin. Treatments incorporate handcrafted masks, scrubs and polishes made from the organic ingredients available at the farm.
And whilst you could do worse than submitting to a muscle-melting massage in the airy Mediterranean trappings of the spa, you can also opt to take your experience next to the waves of Cayman Brac’s beach or by the private pool of your cottage.
This past December, the resort opened the doors to The Lemon Bar & Restaurant. Along with its sister restaurant, Mango Lounge, it takes the ubiquitous farm-to-table moniker quite literally. You’ll find a menu teeming with relaxed island fare and cocktails that make use of the fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs found on the property’s farm.
Guests also have the option of enlisting the services of Le Soleil’s on-site private chef, who will expertly tailor meals to the most discerning of palates.
Holistic Hideaway Retreats
Beginning this year, the resort has launched a series of getaways designed and planned by a lineup of health and wellness experts. The five-to-seven-night Holistic Hideaway retreats will feature signature workouts, nutritional meals that incorporate produce from the resort’s farm, guided activities and one-on-one time with the expert heading up the hideaway.
The Holistic Hideaways will include all daily meals and unlimited fresh-pressed juices, two daily signature workouts, two customised spa treatments, daily island excursions and activities, and roundtrip airport transfers. Holistic Hideaways start at $3,000 for five nights, and $3,900 for seven nights.
